"A generation gap or generational gap, is a difference of opinions between one generation and another regarding beliefs, politics, or values. In today's usage, "generation gap" often refers to a perceived gap between younger people and their parents or grandparents" - Wikipedia

Who does the Generation Gap affect?

Young people always try to defend their generation to others. But it is true to say that every generation will find something to complain about regarding the new kids on the block. It could be Nan not understanding the music that ‘kids these days’ listen, the number of piercings that their grandchild seems to have acquired and the younger generations ability to understand how a mobile phone works. All the while stating the old adage 'back in the day...'

But what we all have lost sight of is the fact that every generation has their faults and differences, experiences and attitudes and that in fact all of us have actually gone through similar if not the same experiences as one another regardless of our age! Meeting your first date, first day at school, dances or discos, a new piece of technology, piercing or tattoos!

And yes, the older generation did think about the planet. Well actually they didn't have to as they were already using glass bottles and returning them to the corner shop once used, they didn't have 2 or 3 cars per family, they walked everywhere and going abroad by plane was a distant dream, staycation again!

Will the Generation Gap go away?

The World keeps spinning and we keep developing and generations move on and leave behind them a mark that will never be forgotten, just look at how technology has changed in just the past couple of generations and the wars that all generations have been subjected to. Fashion for example goes back and forwards and merges the generational gap at times - 1960’s: mini skirts cause uproar, 2017: mini skirts, no uproar, in fact we are surprised when they go below the knee!

In the words of David Bowie - Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes?

What hasn’t changed is us as human beings, our needs, wants, our feelings, emotions, our dreams. What has changed is now we honestly have the ability to achieve our dreams if we want to, regardless of our gender, race, religious beliefs etc. In essence the current generation, the Millennials, are an age where all generations can and do happily mix and work together as one, it is a very "accepting of others" generation. At 24, I very much enjoy a drink at the pub with my mates and so does my 84 year old Nan – see we aren’t so different.
